MP urges businesses to respond to consultation

Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has urged local businesses to respond to a government consultation on plans to protect the flow of goods within the UK after Brexit.

David Duguid is urging companies to respond to the consultation.

The UK Government has set out options for the ‘UK Internal Market’ – which will take effect from the end of the EU Transition Period in December this year.

This is designed to ensure there remains no barriers to trade within the UK after the end of the transition period.

The plans include the principle of mutual recognition – making sure that rules on production and sale of goods and services in one part of the UK are recognised in the other parts.

There is also a principle of non-discrimination – to avoid rules being introduced by one part of the UK that discriminate specifically against goods and services from another.

The government wants to hear from businesses and the consultation will run until August 12.

Mr Duguid said: “I would urge any company in the constituency that does business in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to take the time to respond to this consultation.

“As we come to the end of the EU Transition Period in December, the UK Government is putting in place measures to ensure that seamless trade within these islands continues unhindered .

“That requires legislation to be put in place to ensure that rules around the production of goods are the same in Peterhead as they are in Plymouth, Prestatyn or Portadown.

“And contrary to ‘power grab’ claims from the SNP, this bill will actually result in more powers coming to the devolved administrations.

“Two thirds of Scotland’s total trade is with the rest of the UK, so it is vital that there are no barriers and no differences that would hinder any one part of the country compared to another.”
